Do You Need to Pay Tax on Vinted Sales in the UK?

If you sell clothes, toys, or other secondhand items on Vinted, you might have heard rumours about a “new online selling tax.” This has caused a lot of confusion among casual sellers. So, do you actually need to pay tax on the items you sell on Vinted in the UK?

Let’s clear things up.

No, There Is No New Tax for Selling on Vinted

Earlier this year, HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) confirmed that there is no new tax for people selling unwanted items online. Whether you’re selling an old jacket, baby clothes, or unused shoes, the tax rules have not changed.

What Has Changed?

While there’s no new tax, what has changed is how online platforms like Vinted report seller information to HMRC.
From 2024, platforms are now required to share:

  • Sales data
  • Some personal information of sellers

This will happen if:

  • You sell 30 items or more
  • OR you earn around £1,700 (€2,000) or more in a year through Vinted, eBay, Airbnb, etc.

You may notice this if you reach the threshold, Vinted will require you to confirm your identity in order to continue using their services. This reporting helps HMRC track business activity, but it does not automatically mean you need to file a tax return.

When Do You Have to Pay Tax on Vinted Sales?

You may need to register for Self Assessment and pay tax if:

  1. You buy items specifically to resell for a profit,
  2. You make or upcycle goods intending to sell for profit,
  3. You provide paid services through digital platforms, like Airbnb rentals or delivery driving,
AND your income from these activities exceeds £1,000 before expenses in a tax year.

If you’re just decluttering and selling unwanted personal items, you’re not considered “trading” and no tax is due.

Key Point: Selling Unwanted Items = No Tax

If you’re simply selling secondhand items you own and don’t run it as a business, you won’t have to pay tax. This applies to most casual Vinted users.
